Tackling Bloomberg Data through Expertise and Customization

The Challenges

PLUSnxt recently assisted a client in creating customized workflows and processes to fully support chat data from Bloomberg (which is stored in a proprietary short message format unique to Bloomberg data). The in-house counsel's previous efforts in creating custom workflows and processes to support Bloomberg data in Relativity did not yield the desired results. After being introduced to PLUSnxt's engineers, the Client’s team outlined a list of requirements and challenges not only specific to Bloomberg but also applicable to their clients and outside counsel.  Some of the challenges provided were:

• Inability to easily differentiate between internal participants and external participants in chat conversations.
• Inability to easily locate relevant chat messages within large collections consisting of thousands of messages, which included disclaimers and other non-chat informative messages.
• Spending hours of work manually identifying and slicing only responsive information in collections consisting of thousands of messages into new documents within RelativityOne.

The Solution

Working in partnership with Relativity and coordinating with the Client’s case team, PLUSnxt’s team of experts provided a customized solution leveraging SQL, PowerShell scripting, and PLUSnxt’s Relativity Short Message Format (RSMF)utility to analyze the data and address the above challenges to achieve the following results using RelativityOne:

• Extraction of additional metadata fields and customization of the RSMF input format to create customized RSMF input files that would identify the organization associated with each individual participating in communications.
• Creation of custom message types to facilitate the filtering of extraneous messages to enable their team to focus on the analysis and review of substantive messages.
• Creating an automated process to perform slicing within RelativityOne at a bulk level, saving hundreds of hours of manual work.
• Coordinate with the Client’s outside counsel to create customized review workflows to streamline review.

The Benefits

The customized solution that PLUSnxt developed, coordinating with Relativity and the Client’s team, has enabled our Client’s in-house counsel and their outside counsel to streamline analysis and review workflows, identify and analyze important communications more quickly, and save hundreds of hours of manual work, leading to reduced costs and quicker insights. Not only that, but the Client is able to offer and extend these benefits to their additional outside counsel, many of whom are AmLaw50 law firms that come across Bloomberg data in other matters and often have the same challenges.
